Our vision is of a place where local people of all ages can come together, feel part of our community, learn from each other and celebrate our remarkable heritage.
We want to give the Caerphilly Miners back to the community!

Funded through the United Welsh Together Fund, the Caerphilly Miners Outreach Project aims to extend existing provision and development of new activities for older people in the community, whether that's in person or over zoom.

The project provides tenants of schemes across the borough with opportunities to meet new people; learn something new and have fun. Our team of volunteers have successfully set up a programme of consistent activities at the schemes which have grown in popularity including chair exercises, art classes, the miners Elderberries social afternoons and digital inclusion courses.

In providing regular engagement, exercise and creative sessions this project has adapted successful miners sessions to be more accessible and relevant for even more people in our community.

Testimonials
Attending the digital course classes has enabled me to get out of my comfort zone with technology. I've learnt lots of things that are important to know in a world that is pushing us to use our phones and tablets more. It has been invaluable to learn how to create a Covid pass in an encouraging and supported environment. The teacher and volunteers have been great and have given me the courage to use my emails and banking more frequently on my phone. It has been fantastic that this course has been offered through the outreach project. This has made it accessible for me to attend a course I would have otherwise been unable to.

The drop-in sessions have been great! I know that there is a supportive digi team that can help me with all my digital problems including Covid pass and my emails.

I've learnt how to search on google and look at the news when I want to. Mel and the volunteers have given me the confidence to try this on my own.

Our Team
Tara - Tara is a qualified IT Support Specialist and Performing Arts graduate that has passion for empowering anyone and everyone with basic IT skills to combat isolation. Her volunteering role is to connect those in the community to events that are happening at the Miner’s Centre through technology. Tara also leads the weekly art classes, supporting participants well being through artistic activities and music.
Helen - Helen meets weekly with residents in their communal lounge at a local scheme. The session connects via Zoom to the Elderberries Group at the Caerphilly Miners Centre where a whole range of activities are on offer. When the activity planned is not Zoom friendly, Helen delivers alternative activities in person. Activities are well thought out to give everyone involved an enjoyable time socialising, maintaining mobility as well as keeping the brain alert.
Get Involved
Outreach volunteers can get involved with a range of activities and be part of a team who are working to boost confidence and wellbeing amongst participants. Opportunities include:

-
Running arts classes and Elderberries social afternoons
-
Setting up Zoom in communal lounges for participants to follow activities
-
Assisting session leaders by speaking with participants and helping to run activities

Volunteering in the Outreach Project at Caerphilly Miners Centre has given me the opportunity to get out into the community and support those otherwise not able to attend activities. The supportive and nurturing environment at The Miners has helped me gain confidence and given me a sense of achievement. It is a fantastic place to volunteer as there are a wide range of activities to be involved with and you can make a difference in the community.
