Our vision is of a place where local people of all ages can come together, feel part of our community, learn from each other and celebrate our remarkable heritage.

We want to give the Caerphilly Miners back to the community!

For almost 90 years Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital served our local community; a place where place where life was saved, life began, and life was lost – we want to save these extraordinary stories for future generations. 

 

Originally a private residence, local miners raised funds to purchase ‘The Beeches’ and convert it into a hospital for miners and their families. In 1948 the hospital became part of the NHS, it is then that the building took on a wider role, a place of importance to the wider community, as a busy hospital, ever expanding in size and expertise. Many members of our community were born, had their children and even welcomed their grandchildren within our walls. The building connects generations and local families, it connects people to place. 

 

We’ve secured funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to create a series of short videos exploring the history of The Miners’. If you have a memory, story or photograph about Caerphilly Miners’ Hospital that you would like to share, please get in touch. 

 

Volunteer 

We’re building a team of volunteers who are keen to develop their history, creative or digital skills to take an active role in research, collecting memories, recording interviews and video production.  

 

Participants will use archive materials, local history resources and undertake interviews with former staff and community members to plan and produce videos. You will receive guidance to take historical sources to create a clear and accurate narrative. You will receive professional training in how to film and edit a short video. Collectively volunteers will receive support so that they can lead on promoting our heritage to a wider audience. All while becoming a part of the vibrant community at Caerphilly Miners’ Centre.
