Gardening Group
Connecting with our environment
The Miners Gardening Group has been going for 5 years and provides great opportunities for people to enjoy making our outside spaces looking attractive and cared for. Over the years we have had working parties and initiatives.
Keeping the outside borders looking great – working parties in Spring 2017 planted community donated cuttings.
Keeping the tubs in the front looking colourful throughout the year.
Cleaning up the old bus shelter and installing new seating – further work still needed!
Clearing the leaves in the autumn
Building a shed to store our equipment using a Green Caerphilly small grant. This is a great asset for us, although we could do with more space.

Climate Change Project
Caerphilly Miners Community Centre secured a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund to convert a piece of waste ground into a Climate Change “Garden of the Future”. We worked with Renew Wales and Social Farms and Gardens and set up three working parties meetings between November 2019 and February 2020. We used the expertise of David Thorpe, a climate change academic and practitioner to generate priorities and Landscape Architect Fiona Cloke to help us translate these into a design and plan of action.
As well as learning a lot and developing an inspirational plan, the project has attracted new members – Chris, Ann, Dawn, Kairen, Ian and Rosemary. There is also interest from other members of the community in joining up and we have some exciting discussions ahead of us about how we’re going to move forward together.

Progress on the Climate Change Project
- August 2020 -
Following the production of detailed plans for our “garden of the future” produced for us by landscape architect, Fiona Cloke, we have been successful in getting resources from Keep Wales Tidy. This includes some hard landscaping materials, compost bins, a water butt, a greenhouse and some fruit trees and bushes. Chris, Ruth, Louise, Phil and Katherine met with them on August 25th to agree how and when we can take delivery and get started.
However, before we can start planting anything, our next steps for our garden will be to move the earth to create our pond, build some raised beds and create the right levels to make the site accessible. This will require further fundraising, one of our next tasks!
Meanwhile, work is restarting on the front borders to improve drainage, increase the depth of soil and build low retaining walls. We will shortly be seeking quotes to help us with this element.
We need a lot of help with weeding and clearing around the site. Our next working party will be on Friday 4th September at 9.30 am
